The MEL trip to Copenhagen was a great success. In the three days we were there the MEL Students got to visit the Copenhagen Malmo Port, DFDS, Maersk and receive a full day BIMCO training on Chartering at the BIMCO House.

Yesterday the MEL Students had the pleasure of visiting Damen HQ in Gorinchem. Thank you Damen (specifically MEL Alumni Martijn van Tilborg and Shengtong Wang from MEL Class of 2015) for hosting us!

“Class of 2019 – Damen Visit”

The official Opening of the Academic Year 2018-2019 marked the start of the Erasmus University’s 105th anniversary celebrations. The university is celebrating this anniversary together with the city of Rotterdam and its residents on the theme of ‘Science Meets City’. The location chosen for the Opening – the Laurenskerk Church in Rotterdam city centre – was a special one for this very reason.

“Neelie Kroes, Former EU Commissioner, and Prof.dr. Bert E.A. de Groot, MEL Managing Director.”

On 21 September 2018, the MEL Class of 2018 officially graduated after being conferred the Master title by Professor Bert de Groot during the formal Graduation Ceremony. Family, friends, professors and representatives from the business community gathered for this joyous occasion.

Mr. Mark Cooper, Country Manager The Netherlands, Maersk Line was the guest of honor and keynote speaker. He also presented the award for the Maersk Best Thesis Award. Mr. Jeroen Dudley-Owen, Chartering Manager, Inter European Service, Stolt Tankers B.V. did the honors of presenting the Stolt Prize for Student Excellence.

In May 2018, the Maritime Economics and Logistics (MEL) Master Programme, which is a collaboration of both the Erasmus School of Economics and the Rotterdam School of Management, was once again awarded a double Accreditation for the next five years. After a long and rigorous process of re-accreditation by both the Nederlands Vlaams Accreditation Organization (NVAO) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the MEL Programme has again passed all standards of both the NVAO and AACSB. The NVAO is a compulsory accreditation required by Dutch law and ensures the quality of higher education in the Netherlands. The AACSB accreditation is voluntary but, as its focus is to ensure that the goal of creating the next generation of great leaders is achieved, it fits very well with the MEL Programme and what it stands for. MEL is very grateful to have once again been given both accreditations as this means that we can continue our mission of advancing the future leaders in the maritime sector and it means that the MEL reputation worldwide is upheld and can continue to grow better.

On 22 September 2017 family, friends, professors and representatives from the business community gathered for the Graduation Ceremony of the master programme Maritime Economics and Logistics (MEL).

In a festive and international setting, with over 18 different nationalities present, Professor Bert de Groot conferred the Master title to the MEL class of 2017, the 17th class to graduate from the MEL programme. Graduates have the opportunity to remain connected through the MEL alumni network, which has members in over 70 countries. Many alumni were present at the graduation.

The MEL programme is a joint program of the Erasmus School of Economics (ESE) and the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) of Erasmus University Rotterdam.

The participating schools are NVAO, KNAW and Triple Crown, AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS accredited.

The MEL Office has the pleasure to announce that the first formal Alumni Event will be held in Athens, Greece on June 26th, 2015.

Should you wish to register for this event, please send an email to lefel@ese.eur.nl.

Please find below a personal message from Christos Varias, MEL Region Manager of Greece, who is looking forward to welcome MEL Alumni from all over the globe to the first formal MEL Alumni Event.

“Dear fellow Alumni,

Studying at MEL gave us all the opportunity to not only explore and broaden our knowledge about shipping but also to make good friends and hopefully colleagues one day.

The MEL faculty has taken the initiative to strengthen the MEL Alumni Community in several ways and one of it was to appoint one MEL Alumnus from each country as the Region Manager of that particular country, hoping to strengthen the bond between MEL Alumni living and working in the same region as well as to welcome visiting MEL Alumni to their region. Taking this opportunity, I would like to invite all MEL Alumni living and working in Greece, but also all MEL Alumni who might be in Greece on the 26th of June to the first formal MEL Alumni event in Athens.

The event will take place at ‘’Ark restaurant bar’’ at Asteria Glyfada, Grigoriou Lampraki 2, on Friday 26 of June at 18:30.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Best regards,

Christos L. Varias

MEL Regional Manager of Greece”
