Internal PhD

Possibilities for internal PhDs also exist but these require taking up full time residence in The Netherlands for a minimum period of 2 years. General procedures are similar to an external PhD, but now registration fees are applicable for the first two years. In this case, PhD students are considered MEL researchers and they are on contract with the University, on the basis of a Hospitality Agreement. They are entitled to a (shared) room on campus and to all facilities available to staff members. In addition to their PhD research, they are required to organise and give workshops/seminars, co-author research papers with other staff members/PhD students, supervise dissertations, as well as assist in administrative tasks to a limited extent. Registration takes place immediately, as soon a the PhD proposal is accepted by the College of Deans.

Registration fees are currently € 18,000/year. For a single student, the cost of living in Rotterdam (including insurance, etc.) is estimated at € 12,000 per year. At the discretion of MEL, registration fees can be waived for students who are involved in on-going research projects of the Center. This is something assessed on an ad hoc basis, after the student has started, and no commitment can be made in advance.
