Port Management Programme in Oman
The Center for Maritime Economics and Logistics (MEL) has recently started a cooperation with the Technical University of Delft and the Shipping and Transport College (STC) in Rotterdam to provide a Port Management Programme for the Port of Sohar/Port of Rotterdam. The programme entails a full year of classes, workshops and field visits and is a tripartite joint venture among the three institutions aiming at providing advanced and comprehensive specialised education and training in port economics and management. The first (trial) class of 12 carefully selected Omani and Dutch participants kicked off in Rotterdam at the beginning of October 2008. The programme continued in January in Muscat (Sultanate of Oman) for one month and will carry on until the summer in the Netherlands.
The MEL contribution to the programme consists of Port Economics; Port and Terminal Finance; and Shipping Economics. Professor Haralambides and Michele Acciaro opened the fist cycle of lectures in Muscat in January 2009, while the remaining classes will follow in May and June with the support of Dr. Miaojia Liu and other MEL Faculty. In the spring, MEL will also organise a get-together/workshop where programme participants will discuss the future of the ports of Oman and the Middle East with the current MEL class of 2009.
