Scholten in the MEL Classroom
The Chairman of the Port of Rotterdam
challenged MEL students with the new role of the world’s largest port
after corporatisation. His voice was loud and clear to all: the
significance of the Port of Rotterdam goes far beyond the city that hosts
it, or even the Netherlands: Rotterdam is ‘The Port of Europe’ and
policy makers should see it as such, allowing it the necessary autonomy to
achieve what is expected of it.

Research Report for European Commission
The Center for Maritime Economics and
Logistics (MEL) signed a prestigious contract with the Competition
Directorate of the European Commission to advise the EC on its
reassessment of Regulation 4056/86. The Regulation exempts liner shipping
conferences from the antitrust laws of the Union. The project is led by
Prof.dr. H.E. Haralambides while onboard the project wrtr also Dr. A.W.
Veenstra (FBK/MEL); Prof.dr. William Sjostrom (National University of
Ireland); Prof.dr. Michael Fusillo (New York University); Drs Chantal
Cheung Tam He (MEL Manager); and Dr. Ullrich Hautau (MEL).
The
resulting report concluded that no convincing new arguments are brought
forward for either the preservation or the abolition of the liner
conference system. Therefore, the current regulatory regime should be
upheld.
The
European Commission has not made a formal statement on this issue, but a
hearing took place on the 4th of December for all parties involved to
discuss the matter.

Attendance at TOC2003 Europe
On 10-12 June, 2003, a large delegation of MEL Class of 2003 attended
the 27th TOC shipping, ports and terminals conference in
Europe, held in Genoa. The conference’s key topics were “managing

Mediterranean port and shipping dynamics.

students attended all sessions, presentations and debates, and were
instructed to write summaries on these events. These summaries were then
used to draft a full overview of the conference, which has been included
