50 Years of Econometrics in Rotterdam

The Econometric Institute was established in 1956 by Henri Theil with the support of Jan Tinbergen. Taking a 'learning-by-doing approach' the research and training programs of the Institute received worldwide recognition. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Institute an extensive program of activities has been developed.

Econometricians trained in Rotterdam hold leading positions in industry, the banking and insurance sector and national and international government agencies. Similarly, leading research positions in the (inter-)national academic world are taken by Rotterdam econometricians. The "Rotterdam way" of doing econometrics has always been a "hands on" or "learning by doing" approach. Development of theory and how this can be applied in practice is an intrinsic part of this approach.

In order to celebrate these 50 years of doing econometrics, an extensive set of activities has been developed. There is a two week period of intense academic activity in June 2006 culminating in two conferences; a conference on the Future of Econometrics and a conference on 50 years of Econometrics.

For potential future econometric students -those who are still in secondary school- there is a fascinating game plan. There is also a major festivity for the more than 1500 alumni, former staff and students. Special issues of the Journal of Econometrics, Statistica Neerlandica and the will be devoted to reporting on progress and challenges in econometrics.

The organizers warmly invite you to go through the various activities listed
