Container Terminal KPI

MEL joins the Hamburg Committee on the development of the Container Terminal Quality Indicator (CTQI)

The first meeting of the Hamburg Committee on CTQI took place in Hamburg on the 28th of June 2007. The meeting followed up on earlier discussions with shippers, terminal operators and carriers since the beginning of the year. MEL was represented by Michele Acciaro, Assistant Academic Director.

The Hamburg Committee acts as the advisory group to the principals of the development of the Container Terminal Quality Indicator bench mark (CTQI).

The CTQI is an initiative of Germanischer Lloyd (www.gl-group.com) and of the Global Institute of Logistics (www.globeinst.org) aiming at setting an audited independent measure of container terminal efficiency. The proposed index is expected to contribute to an increase in the transparency of the container industry and provide a meaningful measurement of container terminal performance.

The meeting discussed the composition of the index, pointing out to the necessity of always integrating terminal efficiency measurements in the container supply chain. The role that CTQI may play in improving transparency in the industry was also stressed and recognised as an important advantage of the adoption of CTQI. The participants agreed that the acceptance of CTQI as an industry standard will be beneficial to all parties involved in the supply chain.
