BIMCO-MEL
On
Tuesday 22 November, BIMCO and
Center for Maritime Economics and Logistics (MEL), Erasmus University
Rotterdam
signed
a Memorandum of Understanding at the BIMCO House in Copenhagen. The MoU
establishes, in a more formal context, a co-operation between BIMCO and
the Erasmus University, which has already existed for some time.
Carsten Melchiors Secretary General of BIMCO, the world's largest
international shipping association said: “BIMCO is delighted to be
associated with MEL and further the university’s educational objectives
through the provision of lectures, seminars, internships and other
expertise.
Carsten Melchiors continued “One of the challenges faced by the maritime
industry is to ensure that when young people join the maritime industry,
career paths are clear to them. They need to know that we, as an
industry, are able to offer suitable international academic
qualifications on all levels. As shown by MEL, there is high
level academic training available and we need to acknowledge, as an
industry, the benefits of both practical and theoretical education”.
He continued “In order to succeed as an industry we must recognise that
academic qualifications are not a cost, but a long term investment in
human resources. BIMCO is therefore delighted to be able contribute with
our expertise to the educational programmes at MEL.
The MEL Director, Professor Hercules Haralambides concluded: For us at
MEL, nothing can be more gratifying and rewarding for our efforts than
the enthusiastic support by which blue chip companies and organisations,
such as BIMCO, embrace our curriculum and other activities. After all,
the prominence of MEL is due in no small measure to our invaluable
Corporate Network; and BIMCO sits, rightfully, at the apex of this.
